David Volfson captured his first ITF junior title over the weekend, winning the clay-court Grade 4 Jalisco Junior Cup in Mexico.

The 14-year-old from Toronto defeated Mexico’s Jorge Alberto Escutia 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the final to claim the crown. En route, the Canadian also eliminated No. 1 seed Santiago Munoz Quiroga 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-finals. At No. 1789 on the ITF junior rankings, Volfson’s victory over Munoz Qurioga was a huge upset, as the Mexican player sits almost 1,000 spots higher than him and is three years older. He also took out another seeded player, No. 12 Runhao Hua of China, in the second round.

At just 14 years and five months old, Volfson is one of the youngest Canadians to win an ITF junior title.
