Ongoing and regular participation of adults in tennis programs and competitions at any level is an indicator of the health of our sport, and as such is an important part of Tennis Canada’s mission to promote and showcase tennis across Canada. Tennis Canada’s mandate for Seniors Tennis is to promote tennis as a healthy lifestyle choice and encourage participation from the recreational level to international competition.
Key areas of focus for Seniors Tennis include:
- Growing the game
- Effective communication between the senior tennis community, provincial associations and Tennis Canada
- Management of nationally sanctioned events
- World Championship Team selection and support
- National Rankings
While tennis is a fantastic sport for children and youth, it is also a sport for life, with just as many physical, social and emotional benefits for adult players. Tennis can improve aerobic fitness; it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease; it can improve bone health; it can serve as a stress release or it can be a great opportunity to socialize with friends and family. It is never too late to try it out for the first time, so join a local league, try a tournament or check your local club, Parks and Recreation agency or Provincial Tennis Association for adult programs in your area.
The International Tennis Federation currently recognizes a Senior player as someone who has reached 35 years of age. Competitions exist in Canada specifically for Senior players from 35 to 85 years of age, in five year increments.
If you have any suggestions to improve the Seniors Tennis website, or questions about Seniors Tennis in general, please contact your regional representative of the National Seniors Tennis Committee.
